Event description
Join us for the live premiere of Call of the Silent Cell, a new short sci-art film by award-winning artist duo boredomresearch.

About this event

Come along to the free, open-to-all debut live screening of Call of the Silent Cell, a new short film by artist duo boredomresearch, 30th October 5:00-6:30pm at 95 Gloucester Green, Oxford.

Call of the Silent Cell is an experimental short film that has been commissioned for the One Cell at a Time exhibition, which is part of the Human Cell Atlas research initiative. Human Cell Atlas scientists are aiming to map every cell type in the human body as a basis for both understanding human health and diagnosing, monitoring and treating disease.

The One Cell At A Time exhibition uses newly-commissioned artworks and creative learning projects to explore the science of the Human Cell Atlas, as well as public attitudes to body, tissue and data donation for research.

Call of the Silent Cell, which is one of the One Cell At A Time commissioned artworks, is a poetic expression of science that illuminates links between our biomedical and environmental health and reflects on the latest insights revealed by single cell analysis. Join us for its cinematic debut on the 30th October 5:00-6:30pm at 95 Gloucester Green, Oxford.

There will also be the opportunity to meet Vicky Isley & Paul Smith (boredomresearch) and their collaborator, Human Cell Atlas member Marcin Pekalski. After the film screening you can ask them questions and enjoy a drink or two.

About the artwork

Call of the Silent Cell is an experimental film of cellular behaviour centred on the interplay between gut microbiology, the immune system and wider concerns regarding the symbiosis of biomedical and environmental health. The film journeys with an old man who wanders through a forest, meditating on the fragility of his body and the environment. A storm arrives, ‘not of breath and air but of cells and their signals’, revealing a disturbance in the body, an immune system in overdrive. Emerging from the storm the old man gains a new wisdom that his bodily health is deeply intertwined with the life of the forest.

Call of the Silent Cell is produced by Fusion Arts and commissioned by One Cell At A Time, a public engagement project for the Human Cell Atlas.

The online artwork is being exhibited as part of the One Cell At A Time exhibition www.onecellatatime.org running from 29 October to 30 November 2021.

This work was funded in whole by Wellcome Trust Grant 218597/Z/19/Z.
