About this event

Calm Crafts Club

Important Information: As of January 2024 we will be hosting the workshops in 'The White Room' at Phoenix Gallery, Brighton. Address and details will be fully updated after our last session at Onca Gallery on Monday 18th December 2023.

What is it?

Calm Crafts Club is a free 1 hour drop-in art workshop for patients of East & Central Brighton GP Surgeries. It is held every Monday 11:30am-12:30pm at Phoenix Gallery, Brighton. Each week we explore a new creative activity - they are always beginner friendly and designed to be calming and meditative. Having a creative outlet is really important for our wellbeing and can support us in being kinder to ourselves and others. If you're interested in finding out more information on what the next workshop will be you can stay updated by following us on instagram @calmcrafts.club

We usually focus on mark-making and pattern making using a different medium each week such as collage, clay, paints, pens and other fun arts and crafts supplies.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for anyone living with anxiety and/or depression who is registered with one of the following surgeries:

St Peter’s, Park Crescent, Ardingly, Pavilion, Regency, Arch, Wellsbourne, Broadway, Woodingdean

These surgeries are part of the East and Central Brighton Primary Care Network

Please contact them directly for any physical and mental health concerns.

How to join in...

You can join in by selecting your surgery in the ticket option. All of the tickets are free and your name and contact information is confidential - we just like to know how many people will be joining us for each workshop.

The space, accessibility and refreshments...

The space is wheelchair accessible but please do contact us if you have any concerns or need further information. There will be relaxing music playing through a small speaker but you are also welcome to put your own headphones on and listen to what makes you feel good.

There are complimentary herbal and caffeinated teas and coffee available to have throughout, plus fruit and biscuits. There will be water and squash available too. Please feel free to bring whatever other drinks and snacks you'd like with you.

Who will be there...

There will be two lovely health care liaisons called Jana (she/her) and Oonagh (she/her) who can answer any logistical questions you may have and give you any further information you may need around other activities and the different support groups offered by the surgeries. There will also be your friendly art teacher called Amy Brown (she/her) she will be there to support you and guide you through the activity of that week. All of the craft workshops are completely beginner friendly and no prior art experience or knowledge is needed. To see what she normally does you can look at her site Cult Milk

How many people will be there?

We have a maximum capacity of 18 places plus 2 spaces for the health care professionals and Amy the teacher. We will make 10 tickets available through Eventbrite and keep 8 places available for drop-ins on the day. It's a lovely opportunity to make friends but you're also under no obligation to chat if you feel overwhelmed or prefer quiet.

What to do if you can no longer make it...

If you realise you can no longer make it, it's really helpful to us if you can let us know so that we can make your space available to someone else. If you forget to tell us or you're unable to reach out, please know we understand and you'll get another chance to book in whenever you're ready.

If you have questions about the event...

Organised by

Our creative workshops are open to everyone at all levels of artistic ability, even if you believe you have none! This is a safe, supportive space to play and try something new. You will get lots of support and guidance throughout and no one is going to make you feel bad if you don't understand or need more time to 'get it'. These are really relaxed, fun and sociable events so if you're on your own or with a group, there is always a friendly face nearby. If you're naturally more shy, there's no pressure to chat with people but the vibe is friendly and most people do have a good chat around the tables. If anyone has any specific needs or would like to ask a question before the event, please contact your workshop teacher Amy Brown at hello@cultmilk.com

*Our pub venues will serve food and drinks - Everyone is invited to eat and drink as they like throughout the workshops.

**The workshops are based at a variety of venues, most are wheelchair friendly but some unfortunately are not, please get in touch if you would like to know more or have any suggestions for venues that have great accessibility for everyone.

Thank you :)
