Help preserve Calverton’s history – volunteer with Calverton Calling!

We’re inviting local residents to join an exciting new project that celebrates Calverton’s rich mining heritage and community traditions through oral histories. Together, we’ll capture stories, memories, and voices that deserve to be remembered – and we need your help to make it happen.

Who we’re looking for

  • Local residents who want to get involved
  • Anyone interested in storytelling, history, or volunteering
  • No prior experience required – full training will be provided!

What you’ll do as a volunteer

  • Take part in a free oral history training day
  • Learn how to record and collect stories from Calverton residents
  • Contribute to a unique community heritage project, including interactive Heritage Telephone Boxes

Training Day Details

  • Location: Calverton Village Hall, NG14 6SA
  • Date: Thursday 6th November
  • Time: 10:30am – 3:30pm

What you’ll learn (led by the East Midlands Oral History Archive team):

  • Why oral history matters and how memories are shaped
  • How to prepare for an interview and design effective questions
  • Interviewing skills: putting people at ease, asking the right questions, using recording equipment
  • Hands-on practice: record and play back short interviews with guidance from EMOHA staff

By the end of the day, you’ll feel confident and ready to begin collecting stories from Calverton residents.

Tea, coffee, and light refreshments will be provided.
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible and has parking.

Spaces are limited – please sign up by Friday 31st October to secure your place.
