Cambridge and the Philosophy of the Commons: A Walking History of the Ivory Tower
What is a university for? How does it serve the public? Why do we have intellectual communities? Why do we have intellectuals? What is the link between academia and democracy? These questions, and more, will be posed by Ben Irvine – editor of the Journal of Modern Wisdom and graduate of King’s College – on a unique, walking historical tour of Cambridge University, its colleges, and the surrounding town. Full of anecdotes about landmark events and locations both famous and not-so famous, the tour will invite its participants to think anew about the ‘common good’ – about how philosophy, and intellectual inquiry generally, can either promote or hinder society.
