Description

All are welcome to the Cambridge Ecofiction Book Group's next meeting at the Polar Library. Join us to discuss Tanya Tagaq's short mythobiography about a teenage girl living in a small Nunavut community in the 1970s, where, she writes, “the air is so clean you can smell the difference between smooth rock and jagged.”

Copies of Split Tooth can be found at the English Faculty Library (borrowable) and the Polar Library (reference copy) and it is also available as an audiobook.

“Tagaq’s surreal meld of poetry and prose transmutes the Arctic’s boundless beauty, intensity, and desolation into a wrenching contemporary mythology.” –The New Yorker

ABOUT THE BOOK

A girl grows up in Nunavut in the 1970s. She knows joy, and friendship, and parents' love. She knows boredom, and listlessness, and bullying. She knows the ravages of alcohol, and violence at the hands of those she should be able to trust. Veering back and forth between the grittiest features of a small arctic town, the electrifying proximity of the world of animals, and the ravishing world of myth, Tanya Tagaq explores a world where the distinctions between good and evil, animal and human, victim and transgressor, real and imagined lose their meaning, but the guiding power of love remains.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tanya Tagaq is a Canadian Inuk throat singer, experimental recording artist, and author. She won the 2014 Polaris Music Prize, and her first novel, Split Tooth, is the winner of the 2019 Indigenous Voices Award for Published Prose in English.
