Event description

Description

Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE and Helen Richardson-Walsh MBE are British hockey players in the GB team that won Gold at the 2016 Summer Rio Olympics, a victory which helped to cement a banner era for women in sport.

Kate has been capped a record breaking 375 times for her country and was the England and Great Britain captain for 13 years. Helen has been a midfielder for both teams since 1999. Between them they have made 600 international appearances as well as playing for the Netherlands team HC Bloemendaal. Now retired, Kate is training to be a coach whilst Helen, still in the Olympic team, is studying psychology part time.

Kate and Helen have also made records off the pitch. Marrying in 2013, the same year same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK, they are the first same-sex couple to go to the Olympics together. In the 2017 New Year Honours list Richardson-Walsh was awarded an MBE for services to hockey whilst her wife, Kate received an OBE, also making them the first same-sex married couple to be honoured in the same list.

As well as being poster girls for international sporting excellence, their high profile status as a same-sex couple has made the Richardson-Walshes LGBT sporting icons, opening up the conversation around sport, sexuality and inclusivity: ‘Unless relationships like ours are talked about openly, we’ll never get over it being taboo for some people’.

Join Girl Talk for what will undoubtedly be a frank and inspiring discussion about sport, sweat, sexuality and success.
