Event description

Interested in making a significant and sustained improvement in your subject knowledge AND teaching of KS3 / KS4 forces and motion?

I am running a pilot of a subject based local mentoring scheme. Details of the pilot scheme are as follows:

  • Intended for reflective specialists of any science discipline.
  • To help teachers to improve their own Subject Matter Knowledge and understanding / tackle their own misconceptions.
  • To help teachers to achieve better Pedagogical Content Knowledge - i.e. understand the difficulties commonly experienced by students; be confident running practicals (knowing the pitfalls, considering alternatives).
  • Approaches based on evidence.
  • I'm looking for local colleagues (from up to 7 schools, 1-3 teachers from each school) to commit in the region of 10 hours:
  1. 3 face to face sessions involving hands-on practical (1.5 hours each session);
  2. 4 online video conference meetings (using google hangouts) (30-60 mins each session);
  3. completing several assignments (some content knowledge based, some related to teaching practice, approx 30 mins each assignment);
  4. reflect on their own practice and on the merits of this pilot.

Expected Benefits

  • You improve your own subject knowledge of forces and motion (an area of physics that's often poorly understood).
  • You improve your teaching of forces and motion (including practical experiments/demos).
  • Your students may become more confident and achieve better results.
  • Your departmental colleagues may benefit from your experience and from discussions with you.
  • You are supported by an experienced teacher and CPD provider at no cost to you or your school.
  • You develop (and contribute to) a network of local colleagues, whom you meet face to face, online via talkphysics and online via google hangouts.
  • Certificated and documented CPD including reflection - ideal to cite in your PM / annual review.
