"Cambridgeshire Pals”, the project to honour and commemorate the men
from 11th Battalion the Suffolk Regiment who fought and died on the Somme was launched on the 100th anniversary of the start of the battle with a remembrance ceremony in Ely Cathedral. Since then a number of relatives and interested people have been uploading details about the 189 men who died on that tragic day onto the Cambridgeshire Community Archive site (CCAN) http://great-war.ccan.co.uk/
A major aspect of the project will be a series of talks around the county by historian and battlefield guide, Andrew Spooner. The third of these events will be in Comberton Village College Sports & Leisure Centre. Project staff will be in the library from 6 until 9 and the talk itself will be at 7. There will be displays of artefacts, a rare 11th Suffolk uniform, books and trench maps. Staff will also be on hand to help people upload information onto the CCAN site. Entry to the event will be free.
