Camden Cyclists' Cambridge infrastructure inspection and ride to Ely
Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (PDT)
This ride is cancelled due to the forecast continuous rain in Cambridge for 12 October.
We're limiting the registration to the first 6 who sign up on EventBrite (plus 5 places already issued) to ensure that the train isn't overcrowded with bicycles. Others (unticketed) are welcome to join us at Cambridge station at 10:00 am, provided that they don't use the 9:04 train from Kings Cross.
Meet 8:50 am for 9:04 train Kings Cross - Cambridge
Buy a day return rail ticket to Ely.
10:15 - 12:15 Cambridge cycle infrastucture quick inspection tour
Catholic Church junction (advance green on Hills Road branch)
"The junction here cost an incredible £900,000 to change. Half of this, £450,000, has come from a specific cycle safety fund"
"Will this junction encourage new people to cycle? Absolutely not. Will it deal with traffic congestion in the area? No, the County basically has a policy void on that."
Existing two-tier racks and the plans for a 3000-place indoor cycle park
Grand Arcade indoor parking:
Computer Lab cycle shed (away from the centre, so we may not have time):
Access and shared space
Sidney Street and Market Square
Kings Parade and Trinity Street
Public footbridge over the backs
New Cam cycle crossing
Raliway crossing bridge at the station
We're not aiming to be as comprehensive as the tour organised last year for LCC by Cambridge Cycling Campaign because we're only allocating 2 hours to the Cambridge part of our ride:
12:15 - 16:30 Cambridge-Ely ride
Via the re-routed NCN 11 including the Reach Lode bridge:
There are pubs or tea-rooms at Waterbeach/Clayhithe (about 6 miles), Wicken (about 15 miles) and Ely.
We'll probably aim to get lunch in Waterbeach and tea at Wicken.
