Event description

Description

A pilgrimage walk will take place from Finchale Abbey to Durham Cathedral on Saturday 17 March.

During the Middle Ages, the Way of St James was one of the most important pilgrimages and led to the shrine of St James in the Northern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Christians travelling from Northern Europe and Scandanavia would often arrive by sea close to Durham and travel to Finchale Priory to learn from St Godric about the pilgrimage route.

The walk from Finchale Priory to Durham cathedral would be, for many, the start of this holy pilgrimage walk. This segment of the walk is recognised by the Xacobeo, the St James’ way authorities, as a recognised portion of the English Way, one of several routes by which pilgrims can reach Santiago de Compostela.

This year, the walk, which is organised with the Friends of the Camino route at Finchale, will coincide with the St Cuthbert Day celebrations. On arrival in Durham City, there will be a procession to the cathedral leaving the Market Place at 1.50p.m.

Transport is provided from County Hall, Durham at 11.00a.m. where free parking is available.

All walkers are welcome but booking is required for transport to Finchale.
