Event description
Come along to the Campaign for a Yorkshire Parliament launch event in York

About this Event

The Campaign for a Yorkshire Parliament, quite simply, wants a devolved parliament for our county.

The apparent impotence of the Westminster government and the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of Brexit is taking its toll, but what is clear, now more than ever, is that it is essential that Yorkshire is firing on all cylinders.

This campaign is about creating a better future for our county, A future based on the empowerment to make our own decisions; the empowerment to invent and innovate, and to nurture our county; the empowerment to invest in our infrastructure; the empowerment not only to protect but also to enhance both our built and rural environments for future generations.

Such empowerment is only possible through the establishment of a devolved parliament for Yorkshire: a parliament where everybody's voice is heard and where every vote counts.

We believe that it requires a parliament whose aim will be to transform Yorkshire into one of economic and social prosperity and inclusion, fully committed to the ecological sustainability of our county.

The potential of an empowered Yorkshire with a population of over five million people and an economy worth in excess of £110bn annually is tremendous, but that potential can only be achieved with much greater control of our own future.

This event will bring together people from across the political spectrum and other, non-political players, to discuss the key aspects of a Yorkshire Parliament.

Why a parliament?

What can it do for the people of Yorkshire?

Why is it the best option when it comes to regional democracy and devolution?

How do we get one?

What powers should it have?

Guest speakers confirmed so far, include:

- Natalie Bennett, former Leader of the Green Party

- Simon Duffy, Director of the Sheffield-based Centre for Welfare Reform

- Diana Wallis, ex- MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber

- Councillor Andy Walker, East Riding Council, representing the Campaign for a Yorkshire Parliament

- James Blanchard, Liberal Democrats

- Bob Buxton, Yorkshire Party

Do you believe, like we do, that our county, our children, grandchildren and the generations still to be born deserve a better future than that offered by Westminster?

If so, please join us on 27th July in York and help us make a difference.
