About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

This meeting is the third OPEN MEETING where we are hoping to lay the foundations for a smooth process of working together and achieving justice in social care! We want our work to appeal to the public, political leaders and to policy makers.

ILG Community have kindly hosted the first 2 meetings and Campaign for Real Care are hosting this one. If you want to join our coalition please come along !

Below are details about what we are for now calling the Roadmap to Independent Living Coalition (RILC)

    Background

We are a group of older and disabled people, advocates and professionals (some representing campaign organisations) who have decided to work together to achieve change in adult social care.

We know that across the country older and disabled people are being increasingly targeted and that the gap between the vision we have for our lives and the actual resources and practices in social care is widening.

In Manchester there is potential for change thanks to pressure from the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People. The Mayor is promising to work towards achieving a National Care Service free at the point of need and will involve the Commission for Disabled People.

In Bristol the Council has publicly scrapped their proposed 'Fair & Affordable Care Policy' following a brilliant campaign by Bristol Reclaiming Independent Living. It has now set up a 'Meeting Needs' group including older and disabled people's organisations to advise policy makers on an alternative.

These are key areas of opportunity for our movement and so we must work together to support Manchester, Bristol and beyond to influence policy and practice nationally and locally and to ensure politicians will be held to account.

    Why a Roadmap?

The Roadmap concept came from the work that is happening in Manchester and offers a useful format for thinking about short, medium and long term strategy for campaigning.

    Our roadmap can set out

    • How we believe social care should and could work
    • How it should intersect in meaningful ways with other areas of public policy
    • How our separate campaigns can work together to co-create a common strategy for achieving the change we need starting NOW!

We've had enough of sitting on the sidelines in fragmented groups, we need to come together and place ourselves firmly front and center, with progressive and achievable goals for policy and practice.

    How we work

    We hold collaborative open meetings.

We are focused on the task of achieving our goal.

There are a number of organisations involved with a similar ethos.

Anyone is welcome from PA employers, campaigning organisations or anyone interested in the discussion.

Please note the link to the Zoom meeting will be emailed out the evening before. If you haven't got it please check your spam before contacting us.
