Event description
A day of presentation and discussion about pathways to supporting and developing caareers in the creative and cultural industries

About this Event

What does a career pathway in the creative and cultural industries look like?

What does it look like in Cambridge?

How do we/can we nurture and support local potential/talent?

Cambridge schools and universities produce many creative and skilled individuals, but how many find their way into the local creative and cultural workforce? It’s estimated that the creative industries comprise “2,040,000 jobs - 75 per cent of them outside London - the UK's creative industries are developing new jobs faster than other sectors despite record employment in the UK economy as a whole." Creative Industries Council www.thecreativeindustries.co.uk

What about the workforce that evolves via less formal channels? How does the talent and experience that emerges in this way find space in the wider arena? In developing and sustaining the city’s cultural offering, how do we ensure equality of opportunity for those drawn to creative work?

For those in careers, are there useful models of professional growth to aspire to? Where is the guidance to sustain a long and healthy career?

The 2020 CAN conference will explore pathways into and through the creative and cultural industries carved in Cambridge, making the most of the potential generated in the city and methods to contributing to its growth and sustain momentum. With speakers representing a range of organisations and existing models of professional development, the conference will explore:

• Formal and informal learning

Industry working effectively together to prepare the new workforce and the opportunities to apply creative skills

• Equality of access to opportunities

The scope of opportunities, who they are perceived to be for, and how their communicated and engaged with

• Sustaining and developing a career

Making industry relationships, mentoring and continuing development, as well as the power of networks and the support they offer

• The role of infrastructure

What local resources are needed to support the sustainability of a local creative workforce?

• Supporting wellbeing

Managing health & wellbeing while forging a career

The conference theme will be explored through a 1 day programme of talks and workshops. This event always seeks to provide an opportunity to network as well as share practice and ideas that inform our collective offering for the city and greater Cambridge.
