ABOUT THE EVENT:
The event is a collaboration between Nordic Model Now! and Men at Work.
Nordic Model Now! is a secular, feminist, grassroots women’s group campaigning for the abolition of prostitution and related practices (such as lap-dancing, pornography and surrogacy).
You can find out more at: http://nordicmodelnow.org/
Men at Work is a Community Interest Company (CIC) established by Michael Conroy to deliver bespoke training, presentations and workshops on ‘Understanding Social Influences on Boys & Young Men’ to professionals in a wide range of settings.
You can find out more at: http://menatworkorganisation.wordpress.com/
The talks will be followed by discussion and questions to the panel.
This is a mixed event.
This event will include women talking about some of the worst forms of male violence. We ask everyone, but particularly men, to be mindful of this and how both speakers and members of the audience may find this triggering because it resonates with their own experiences of male violence. We ask everyone to be open and respectful.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Kathleen Richardson – Professor of Ethics and Culture of Robots and AI, De Montfort University with a special interest in the ethics of sex robots.
Sex trade survivors from Nordic Model Now! – Members of the Nordic Model Now! group who have themselves experienced prostitution will speak about their experiences and why they believe that the sex industry can never be reformed or made safe and why we must resist its sanitisation and normalisation.
Michael Conroy has worked in secondary education for 15 years. He has become increasingly engaged in working with boys and young men (and the professionals who support them) in generating constructive dialogues about the social influences that persuade us what it means to 'Be A Man.’ In addition to schools-based work, Michael facilitates men’s discussion groups in various cities, with male and female speakers, and is a Youth Mental Health Instructor with a keen interest in suicide prevention. He will be publishing a manual for educators called ‘Foundations: A Programme of Support and Challenge for Boys, Young Men and Those Who Work with Them’ in 2020.
