Can renewables alone meet societal energy demand? Should we be investing in nuclear? As citizens of the UK, where does sustainability lie?
About this event
Energy is a necessity for humanity. The world largely recognises that fossil fuel led energy is unsustainable.
The debate rages between those who recoil at the thought of another Fukushima or Chernobyl, with those that see Nuclear as the only feasible option for a carbon free energy source.
Renewables, say the Nuclear enthusiasts, are expensive, and still require technological advancements before they can meet demands. The environmental groups are adamant that even at the cost of power-cuts and a poorer standard of living, we must not grow Nuclear.
There are many angles the government thinks about: Health & Safety, Environment, Energy Demand, Economics & Risk.
UK has 15 operable nuclear reactors currently operating that are connected to the Grid, which makes us the 9th highest in the world. Is this justified for the sq/mile of the UK in comparison to the world ? Some parts of the world have endorsed Nuclear energy and not the others, why is this the case?
As citizens of the UK, where does sustainability lie? Come and explore this issue further in our Fireside Conversation with Professor Nawal Prinja a Nuclear physicist and a special advisor to the UK government on Nuclear Policy.
