Event description
What principles do you think should govern political debate?

About this Event

Democracies pride themselves on allowing space for free political discussion as a way of reaching a compromise.

But political conversation in parliaments, on TV and on social media seems to be increasingly polarised.

Because of this, the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland is seeking to create a charter for responsible public debate.

Join chair John O’Connor, Catholic chaplain for the Universities of Edinburgh, Napier and Queen Margaret, to discuss how we can find ways to disagree while still achieving common ground.

Panellists include:

  • Professor Matthew Chrisman, political philosopher, University of Edinburgh
  • Dr Alice König, Roman historian, University of St Andrews
  • Jason Boxt, US pollster (conducts and analyses opinion polls)

In partnership with Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Young Academy of Scotland
