13.00 - 13.45 Lunch
Pressures on universities to improve the quality of their teaching are greater than ever, but teaching has to compete very hard with research for time and attention. Recent work on prestige in academic life suggests that prestige and reputation are different drivers and need to be understood as such. The enduring tension between research and teaching could be seen as an unequal contest between prestige and reputation. In the light of this and the pending development of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), can we change the ways we think about and value teaching?
