Event description
Is capitalism past its sell by date? Or can it be reinvented for the digital age?

About this event

For capitalism's defenders, democracy and the market are said to be handmaidens. Both depend on the rule of law. Both express aspects of liberty, prizing opportunity and mobility. During the era of classical liberalism, free commerce and political freedom advanced in tandem. And after World War II, capitalism included not just those earlier hallmarks but liberal values such as tolerance, compromise, as well as regulatory and social welfare policies to buffer the less savory tendencies of markets. Modern capitalism reflected a grand social bargain.

But fast forward to 2021 and capitalism is in crisis. From the climate emergency to ever expanding inequality our economic system no longer seems to be working in tandem with the interests of most people. The young are losing faith in social mobility and a widening consensus is emerging that tinkering at the edges is not enough.

So, is capitalism past its sell by date? Or can it be reinvented for the digital age? We bring together Gillian Tett and Yanis Varoufakis, two thinkers with radically different visions to debate the future of our economic system.
