Event description

Description

Start 9:00am Ashton or 10:30 Droylsden

This is a one-way trip from Ashton to Castlefield along the Ashton Canal and Rochdale Canal. 8 miles but going down 27 locks.

This is using what would otherwise be an unused journey leg so you will be helping out the charity financially as well as having an enjoyable day yourselves.

Help with locks, have a go at steering, chill out on-board, walk along beside, spot the wildlife, it's your choice. Unlimited tea, coffee & milk available.

Please arrive by 9:00 for safety briefing. Possibility of joining at the 1st lock near Droylsden Marina (nearest postcode M34 6GN) at approx 10:30. Please let us know if you wish to take this option, you will have to have a safety briefing etc when you join. Finish about 6pm canal time (i.e. very approx) in Castlefield, but if you want to jump ship earlier (e.g. Piccadilly 1.5 hours before) just let the skipper know, this canal is never more than a short walk from civilisation & the tram route.

Full cooking facilities available. Possibility of overnight stay before or after for additional contribution (contact us for availability) bringing your own sleeping bag. Maximum capacity is 12 passengers on the trip or 8 overnight.

Parikng in Portland Basin is good, and return leg is easy by tram, bicycle, train or 219 bus.

"Hazel" is a wonderful boat. Built 103 years ago to carry salt, she became a houseboat in 1951 and was recently lovingly restored by craftspeople of the Wooden Canal Boat Society (a registered charity) to provide uplifting holidays on the canals of England. Towed by the motorboat "Forget me Not", she will take you on a wonderful journey through a peaceful land. You will have a crew of WCBS volunteers to navigate the boats. Hazel was featured recently in John Sergent's "Barging Around Britain" TV program.
