About this Event

Foulshaw Moss is an important lowland raised mire and is one of Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves near Witherslack. There are several tasks we hope to carry out here that will help the peatland habitat remain wet.

These will include removing the invasive rhododendron that will, if left unchecked start to dry the peat out. We also hope to collect and transplant fenland plants such as reeds to help them spread further across the site. Additionally, there are a couple of unblocked drains remaining on the reserve that we hope to be able to dam up to further increase the water levels and promote peat formation.

Meet at the reserve carpark OS Grid ref SD548 837. From Kendal take the A590 towards Barrow-inFurness. At the end of the dual carriageway at Gilpin Bridge, continue for 1km/0.6 miles. Immediately before a signed parking layby on the west-bound carriageway, a track leaves the road. Go through the gate and follow the track until a small car park is reached.

For all events ensure that you bring a packed lunch, wellington boots/waterproof walking boots and appropriate warm waterproof outdoor clothing, ideally with some spare clothes. Unfortunately, due to current circumstances we will not be able to offer lifts at this time.

**All conservation days will be conducted in a safe and socially distanced manner. Please ensure you bring hand sanitiser along and not share lunches and equipment. We would also ask that people follow government guidance and not attend if you have any Covid-19 symptoms or are required to self-isolate. Thank you.
