Cordial Spirits: Drinking and Sociability in the very long eighteenth century

About this Event

A Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies conference

Welcome to Cordial Spirits in the Long Eighteenth Century! This interdisciplinary day conference will bring scholars from round the country, together with Grant Montgomery, BBC award-winning production designer of heritage dramas such as Sanditon and Peaky Blinders, to discuss the pleasures and dangers of alcohol c.1660-1850. Join us to find out what your choice of drink (and what you drink it from) says about you in the eighteenth century, to hear about pubs and gin bars, and to discover the poetics of drink.

Speakers include: Matt Campbell (York), Joanna de Groot (York), Steve Earnshaw (Sheffield Hallam), Judith Hawley (Royal Holloway), Mark Jenner (York), Emma Major (York), Angela McShane (Wellcome Collection), Grant Montgomery (BBC), Gillian Russell (York), Kathryn Sutherland (Oxford) and Jim Watt (York)

Registration includes tea/coffee breaks, lunch and a gin tasting with Emma Godivala from York Gin.

Full programme to follow soon!
