CANCELLED: Gatherings from Graveyards: One Man's Crusade to Clean Up London...
Thu 20 April 2017, 14:00 – 15:00 BST
London in the 1830s: while grand tombs were raised over the graves of the wealthy in the new 'Magnificent Seven' cemeteries, thousands of London's dead were still being crammed into the inner city's overflowing burial grounds. In a period where the health hazards posed by urban burial grounds were little understood, the young surgeon George Alfred Walker set out to investigate why London's graveyards were making the city ill, and along the way uncovered grim tales of bodysnatchers, corruption and mutilation. Join Caroline Swan, author of the Flickering Lamps blog, to hear about 'Graveyard' Walker's work and his influence on burial practices in Victorian London.
