Kate currently has a solo show at the Art House until November 13th - her pieces are all painted using the vibrant acrylic inks.
These inks are a versatile, accessible material which can create all sorts of effects - from soft swathes of colour to fine detail.
The session will be run in an informal atmosphere where 'having a go' is key. Kate's relaxed, enthusiastic style of teaching will make you feel at ease and encourage you to play, make mistakes, and experiment as you learn.
The session will start with the pure basics (so no worries if you don't know a thing about art!), before moving on to painting and drawing, using brushes and dipping pens.
This session aims to teach you some of the basics so that you can go home and put into practice what you have learnt.
There are just 8 spaces, so please book now to avoid missing out - Kate's last session was full a week in advance so get your space quickly to avoid disappointment!
- Materials are provided, but feel free to bring your own.
- Dress for mess!
- This session is suitable for adults and older teens.
- The session will be in our upstairs gallery/workshop space which is accessed via a wide staircase with bannisters on either side. Accessible toilets are on the ground floor.
- There will be a break at around 2pm for about 30 minutes, please pre-order drinks or lunches when you arrive.
- The cafe is open from 12 if you want to have something to eat or drink beforehand.
- Please arrive on time for a 12.30 prompt start.
Kate has been drawing for a long time, and painting with watercolour since she was 8. Now that she has 3 children she is keen to pass on her artistic knowledge.
Kate finds her inspiration in nature, in the shapes and forms, the way the grass blows in the wind, and in the incredible variety of shades and texture. Kate grew up just outside of Salisbury, and spent a lot of time outside.
Her style is impressionistic and Kate paints what she feels. The work has a vibrant energy about it, movement and varying shades are encompassed within the work . Her use of tools vary from brushes and pens to porcupine quills. It is the basis of the energetic style that Kate has mastered.
Kate completed an Art Foundation and went on to study textiles and furniture at University in York.
Upon finishing her degree Kate travelled extensively. She was an au pair in Italy for 3 months and this inspired her to venture further afield. Her travels, in 1999, took her to Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa amongst others. She was clearly deeply influenced by visiting these countries- the use of colour, the skies and flora still have a profound impact to this day.
Kate had an art studio in Wimbledon upon returning from her second stint of travel in 2002. Here she was able to sell large scale canvases using a newly acquired medium, namely acrylic ink. Kate has not looked back, and you could say she was obsessed with inks. Watercolours have recently made a resurgence too.
Currently Kate resides in the Southampton and is a very regular visitor to the New Forest, Furzey Gardens and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens where her children love to run around. She can often be found taking far too many photographs at these well kept Gardens, of which her and her family are members. Trying to get Kate to come home from a trip to the forest is akin to dragging a toddler out of a sweet shop.
