About this event
Artswork are delighted to be working with The Royal Opera House to bring Create and Dance to our region over three twilight zooms this autumn term, on Wednesdays 14th and 28th September and 12th October.
Alice's Adventures is part of the Create and Dance CPDL programme that develops both teachers and students understanding of Dance and Literacy, stimulating their imagination and creativity.
This event is your chance to find out more about the programme and register your interest. You will hear from course leaders and previous participants.
‘The INSET was so effective. We had already planned a lesson using verbs and adverbs over lunch! We also had a PDM with all the teaching staff at our school. We delivered a practical dance workshop with them as well as looking at long term plans for the whole school.’ Helen Fry, High Hurstwood Primary, Eastbourne
Alice’s Adventures provides the stimulus for a Create and Dance scheme of work that can support cross-curricular learning, particularly literacy, for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 teachers. The schemes of work include a series of films featuring Karim Zeroual from CBBC, who journeys down the rabbit hole with Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet, Lauren Cuthbertson, to understand the basics of creating dance.
Over three short sessions this CPD programme explores the 'Building Blocks' of dance to inspire writing in line with the 12 Strands of the Literacy Curriculum. Attendees will engage with three different creative explorations to generate movement and writing outcomes, using themes from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
This practical training provides teachers with the skills and confidence to encourage their students' creativity, movement skills and writing. The activity is interspersed with moments of discussion, lesson planning and an online tour of the learning platform. A scheme of work included.
What is Create and Dance?
The Royal Opera House’s Create and Dance programme offers creative learning for schools across the UK. You can read more about it in this 2019 article published in Impact, the journal of the Chartered College of Teaching.
The programme has been designed with teachers, maintaining strong curriculum links to develop children’s understanding of dance; stimulating their imagination and creativity. With dedicated teacher training, classroom films and lesson plans, these resources suit the needs of teachers and their students.
Whether you have been part of the project before, or whether you are completely new to Create and Dance, we are delighted at your interest in this growing community. Find out more about the programme and other opportunites on The Royal Opera House Learning Platform.
Is this for me?
This programme is suitable for both specialist and non-specialist teachers working in primary, lower secondary phases and SEND. You do not need previous dance knowledge to take part. You will need to be available to attend all three sessions.
Programme Delivery
This programme will be delivered using Zoom, and a login link will be sent to you via email in time for the sessions. You do not need to have a Zoom account to take part in this webinar, but you will need access to a computer or smartphone that has video capabilities.
The creative and interactive training sessions invite teachers to collaborate and explore the Create and Dance programme together. There is an emphasis on play, discovery and participation and we therefore ask attendees to bring a a "give it a go" attitude. We ask all participants to have their camera on at all times. This is to ensure that the everyone can participate in the digital space together, creating a safe and welcoming environment for all. It also ensures that the ROH Dance Artists can cater the session to those that are participating in real-time, like they would in a real space. The sessions are not recorded.
Costs
Create and Dance training is FREE of charge for schools, but there is still a cost to the ROH of putting on this training at £100 per school attending. To ensure teachers receive a high-quality experience (exploring an art form that could feel quite exposing if there are not enough teachers in the room), schools that sign up are requested to fully commit to attending all sessions. We hope that this will ensure we do not run under-subscribed training days and culmination events, providing everyone with a great experience.
'Having taught the building blocks, seen children interpret them and done it myself during CPD, it was truly lovely to tie it that all together and see how the professional dancers use all of that on stage. I found I was able to appreciate ballet like I never have before, through a new lens. Thanks to Create and Dance training and putting that into action in the classroom, I found myself chuckling as I noticed all the movements, the dynamics, the relationships and how they matched the music and the mood to create a performance that made me laugh, smile, love and cry. ' Garrie Rogers – Southfields Primary School, Coventry, 2021/22
We look forward to welcoming you.
