Values in Climate Science Communication
Faced with the dangers of the accelerating climate crisis, the knowledge and guidance provided by climate science is of existential importance for the decisions we make as a society. But science, the systematic pursuit of knowledge, is conducted by people who need to make choices in their work: what research topics to pursue; what methods to use; how to interpret data; and how to communicate findings. These choices are imbued with value judgments. Dr Katherine Furman, Lecturer in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and Dr Antal Wozniak, Lecturer in Communication and Media take a look at how climate scientists communicate their finding with us, the public, and the social and political values embedded in this communication.
This is the third of six public lectures hosted by the School of the Arts at the University of Liverpool on the theme Arts, Sustainability and the Climate Crisis.
