About this course

This course is for parents, grandparents, carers and anyone who supports a child with autism (diagnosis or no diagnosis) understand how social stories can help their child improve their social skills and interact in an effective and appropriate manner.  Comic strips are a visual way to help explore a young person’s thoughts and feelings about a situation.  You can use a comic strip conversation to break down social situations that may have been confusing or upsetting for a young person.

What will be covered on the course?  What will be taught to learners?

  • Have an improved understanding of social stories and comic strip conversations.
  • Share ideas about useful topics to help overcome some of the difficulties of everyday life.
  • Write a social story with words and pictures/photographs to help their child not only know what to do in a given situation but also to help them gain a better understanding about how others may feel .
  • Understand how to write comic strip conversations to help a child understand a social situation.

What will learners achieve by the end of the course?

  • We will write a social story by picturing the goal, gathering information and tailoring the text to suit the situation, appropriate to the child’s age and level of understanding.  We will write a comic strip conversation to help understand feelings and emotions in a social situation.
