Graduation is a wonderful opportunity to see our students achieve their ambition to graduate in the company of their families, friends and the Queen Mary community. Queen Mary staff have the chance to nominate fellow colleagues, or volunteer themselves, to take part in Graduation.

You can either volunteer yourself, or nominate a fellow colleague, to any of the following roles:

Mace Bearer:

The role of Mace Bearer is a very prestigious one, which involves leading the academic procession into the Great Hall and onto the stage in the ceremonies. Those chosen to undertake the role will wear a gown and carry the Queen Mary mace.

Stage Marshal:

Every ceremony, a stage marshal joins a representative from Academic Registry to ensure that students cross the stage in the correct order. The role is less daunting, and a lot more rewarding, than it sounds and those taking on this role will be offered the opportunity to shadow an experienced stage marshal.

Ticket collection Helper:

Volunteers on the ticket collection desk help distribute graduate tickets and welcome students and guests into the ceremonies. Volunteers are required to help for the 2 hours before each ceremony.

Welcome desk helper:

In addition to helping on the ticket collection desk, the Events and Ceremonies Team are on the hunt for members of staff to assist on the Welcome Desk in the Graduate Centre. Here you will be tasked with providing general information about the ceremonies and welcoming and directing graduates and guests to the gowning and photography areas.

Graduation Procession Manager:

Registry need your help getting the stage set before each ceremony, rounding up the procession and ensuring they get to the ceremony on time and in the right order. f you are interested in this behind the scenes role, please sign up here.

Food Festival helper:

The catering team need your help with managing the flow of graduates and guests in the Food Festival. You will only be required for a 30 minute period to help greet graduates and their guests as they arrive at the Food Festival and help direct them to the bar / food stalls. This role will be based outside and there will be lots of music to enjoy!

Join the Graduation Procession:

Partake in the Graduation Procession and cross the stage with academics and senior leadership. To be part of the procession, please click here and complete the form before Friday 19th June 2020.

To volunteer / nominate:

Any member of staff can take on any of the above roles (including joining the graduation procession) regardless of whether they hold a degree or not.

  • Staff can either volunteer themselves or nominate a fellow colleague.
  • There are no restrictions to the number of nominations slots you submit.

To volunteer or nominate, please click 'Register' and complete the 'Registration Information' fully at the check out screen.

"I have been supporting the Events and Ceremonies team with stage marshaling at the summer and winter graduations for the past two years. It’s great to be a part of the wider event- you can’t help but love the buzz. Also, it’s a good feeling to help out other teams and colleagues with QMUL’s biggest and most important event in the calendar!" - Sarah Gifford, Public Engagement Team
