What does it take to be a successful novelist? Just what does it mean to lead a life in writing?

The Longer Read takes a career-wide look at the lives of authors, unpicking the techniques and habits that writers use in their everyday work. These in-conversation events are brought to you by the Manchester Writing School and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation, with a signing and bookstall by Blackwell’s Bookshop. This week's guest is Mark Haddon.

Mark Haddon shot to fame with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, a novel which won a Commonwealth Writers Prize and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

His creativity extends beyond novels. He has adapted Fungus the Bogeyman for BBC television, and one of his Agent Z books was made into a children’s sitcom. He has written poetry, with The Talking Horse and the Sad Girl and the Village Under the Sea coming out in 2005. The title tale in his debut short story collection The Pier Falls: And Other Stories was longlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award.

In May 2019, Mark will publish his first novel for seven years: The Porpoise promises a fantastical adventure over land, air and sea which mirrors the ancient legend of Antiochus.

Mark is also a painter and illustrator, and teaches creative writing for the Arvon Foundation and Oxford University.

“Mark Haddon is terrifyingly talented.” (The Times)

Doors 6.30pm. Event runs from 7pm-9pm including book signing. Entry is free – register here.
