CANCELLED: Wellbeing and retention for vulnerable and shielded
Event Information
About this Event
Join us in this DLL Research Seminar delivered by Dr Domini Bingham (Lecturer on Education, Centre for Educational Leadership, IOE UCL) to explore research undertaken over the summer of 2020, exploring the experiences of 'vulnerable' and 'shielded' teachers and leaders in England during the initial COVID-19 fallout. The seminar will discuss how such experiences impact on their wellbeing and future retention decisions. The vulnerable and shielded, according to the UK Government, were advised to physically not return to school either due to their own health conditions or of those with whom they live.
Methodologically, a mixed methods approach is adopted; semi-structured interviews with 13 teachers and leaders of schools/academies in England, with an online questionnaire collecting wider data on key considerations for a positive return to work; from individual and organisational understandings and imperatives.
Gaining understandings of what it is to lead authentically in schools is pertinent as are perceptions of how governmental guidance and behaviours have been viewed. Retention for schools is pertinent when teacher attrition rates are longstanding (OECD 2017, 2020). The research yields implications for leading and managing schools in a current and post-COVID 19 landscape organisationally and individually, suggesting steps for best practice. Different implications for teachers and leaders and ongoing implications for workplace diversity and inclusive practice for vulnerable groups will be discussed.
