Cancelled - Wildlife Farming & sustainability talk*
Event Information
About this Event
Cancelled - Join us for a talk on the sustainability and wildlife friendly farming practices of the Oxford Artisan Distillery, with a bar stocked with their products available for the talk in their medieval threshing barn.
Most of the wheat, rye and barley grain used in TOAD’s spirits are grown from varieties that were common in Britain before 1900 when plant breeders began to create the hybrid ‘monoculture’ varieties now used in both conventional and organic farming. Many of them are historically interesting, but they also thrive in fields which do not need the chemicals essential in intensive arable farming. These crops are actively improving the condition of farm soil and the wildlife environment, creating a biodiverse grain used to distill award winning spirits.
The Oxford Artisan Distillery (TOAD) is a craft distillery located in Oxford's South Park. They are the only distillery in the world that uses ancient populations of heritage rye, wheat and barley, all sustainably grown exclusively on organic farms within a 50-mile radius of its distillery resulting in spirits with rare and distinctive subtleties. To create their own distinctive field-to-bottle spirits, they have also had to design and build their own fit-for-purpose stills with the help of artisans and engineers from South Devon Railway Engineering.
