About this Event

Event Overview

Cancer Research UK offer free to attend CPD sessions for law firms in the UK. We work with our partner firms to deliver the most up-to-date and relevant continuous professional development content & topics for solicitors.

Today's event will explore the topics of charities as beneficiaries, estate planning and charity law round-up.

A brief summary of our speakers and these topics can be found below.

  • Guest Speaker: Alan Eccles - Partner at Brodies LLP
  • Topic: Estate planning and charity law round-up

The session will look at some key current developments in succession and estate planning law as well as inheritance tax. This will include a review of the recent Office of Tax Simplification report on inheritance tax and other developments advisers should be aware of when helping clients plan for the future. In the charities sphere, the seminar will cover law and regulatory updates, proposed reform of charity law and issues connected to bequests to charities.

  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Sarah Thomas
  • Topic: A History of Cancer Research in Scotland

A short session from Dr Sarah Thomas on medical discoveries from Scotland that continue to impact modern cancer research today.

Cancer Research UK are often the lead charity in the administration of estates and we work closely with legal professionals and other charities in order to expand on our knowledge and expertise across the legal and third sector.

  • Guest Speaker: Megan Paul - Legacy Management Officer at Cancer Research UK
  • Topic: Charities as Beneficiaries

This session will provide a journey through legacy administration for private client solicitors from a charity perspective and will include case history as reference.

Highlighting the technicalities of charitable legacies and the issues arising with charitable beneficiaries, the session is designed as a continuing competence opportunity for solicitors that handle trusts and estates, particularly where gifts to charity are included.
