About this Event

Candid Book Club

Candid Book Club is a friendly and informal virtual book club hosted by The Candid Collective's wonderful facilitators - among them are sex educators, medical professionals and academics.

We’ll be discussing books about sex, bodies and relationships with the hope of creating open conversation and deepening understanding.

Hosted by an expert in their field, there will plenty of time for questions, contributions and general discussion.

Next date: Monday 6th April 2020 - 18.30 via Zoom

Host: Dr Emma Chan

Emma is a junior doctor, taking an open-ended break from Obstetrics and Gynaecology speciality training. She mostly blogs about genitals and sexual health and works as a Sex Ed facilitator with Sexplain and The Candid Collective

Book: Vagina: A Re-Education by Lynn Enright

From childhood, people with vulvas are misinformed about their bodies, encouraged to describe their genitalia with cute and silly names rather than in anatomically correct terms.

Much relationship and sex education is lacking and mainstream porn is centred around the male gaze. This lead to a lack of knowledge and agency for people of all bodies, but specifically people with vulvas who often feel shame around periods, the appearance of their genitals and their sexual desires.

Vagina: A Re-Education aims to tackle that by giving accurate information about bodies - about the vulva, vagina, clitoris, the orgasm, about conditions like endometriosis and vulvodynia. It confronts taboos, such as abortion, miscarriage, infertility and masturbation. It tackles vital social issues like period poverty, female genital mutilation and the rights of transgender women.

How Candid Book Club works

  • Reserve your spot at the book club via Eventbrite (giving a donation if you can).
  • Keep your Eventbrite confirmation email.
  • Borrow or order and read the book! As you read jot down your thoughts and questions: think about what you liked, didn't like so much and why.
  • A few days before the event you will received an email from The Candid Collective with information about how to join the virtual book club.

More about The Candid Collective

The Candid Collective hosts fun and informative events across London and online. Our discursive and research-led events focus on sex, bodies and relationships with the aim of starting candid conversations.

We know the importance of open, honest and straightforward conversation and how it can positively impact on people's lives.

We are working to make a range of our events available during the coronavirus and welcome any feedback and help with that.
