Event description
Our speaker, Colin Divall, will discuss Canford Manor's 'splendid archway under the South-Western Railway.

About this Event

Bridge 77 popularly known as 'Lady Wimborne's Bridge on the Canford Manor estate is a remarkable structure, a survivor of mid-19th century railway building in southern England. Colin's talk will draw upon many sources including some at Dorset History Centre to explain the history and symbolism of this ostentatious landmark, now accessible as part of the Stour Valley Way.

Colin is an emeritus professor of railway studies in the University of York. He was bought up near Wimborne within sight of the Southampton and Dorchester line north of Bournemouth and spent a good deal of his teenage years trespassing on what was let of the route once Dr. Beeching had cut the passenger trains. Colin had a brief career with British Rail and a rather longer one as a historian in various northern universities and the National Railway Museum.

Always a popular subject and a lecture not to be missed.
