About this event

A whole industry grew up around looking after the large numbers of pilgrims arriving to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket

Our walk explores the experience of a visit to medieval Canterbury where the streets were paved with pilgrims

The heyday was the Fourteenth Century where pilgrims could exceed 200,000 a year.

Gardens / chapels / hospitals

Follow in the footsteps of Henry II, Erasmus, Henry VIII, the fictional characters of Chaucer and innumerable ordinary pilgrims of times past.

And maybe, just maybe, view a piece of Becket himself!

Once you have experienced your tour you will be able to say you have seen:

Churches and Almshouses

The location of pilgrim Inns

Hidden streets and signage

And so much more!

Please note that this walk does not include the Cathedral or precincts

Hello, my name is Kevin Larder.

I am really excited by what I can share with you.

I am a qualified Green Badge City of London Guide and member of the Institute of Tour Guiding. I undertake many walks on behalf of the City of London Guides and Lecturers Association.

I am a retired History/ Politics / RE teacher in London of nearly 40 years’ experience. I graduated from Queen Mary College [University London] where I first had the opportunity to undertake walking tours as vacation work. A large section of my degree concerned the History of London.

Having come from an East End family I have been able to dovetail my passion for the City alongside my teaching career in London.

As a volunteer tour guide since 2009 I developed experience on various walking tours, site tours, battlefield tours abroad, film location bus tours and Thames River tours. I volunteer at Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine’s Abbey. My previous volunteering experience included Wiltons Music Hall, the Brunel Museum and a summer at Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming USA.

Both teaching and guiding provide a service to other people and allows the satisfaction of getting to see others become excited about my city and my favourite places, whilst also deepening my own understanding.

Experienced, qualified, and always entertaining.
