Description

Family Matters Richmond invites you to this workshop about Capacity and Consent, Sexuality and Relationships, which will be led by solicitors Caroline Barrett and Rosie Campbell from legal firm Irwin Mitchell LLP.

This can often be a sensitive and opaque area for parents and young people with SEND. This talk aims to clarify your child's rights and where you stand legally. The talk will focus on:

- The legal framework as set out in the Mental Capacity Act, including how decisions are taken for adults and young people who lack capacity;

- Best interests decision making around relationships and contact with others

- Online relationships/use of social media

- Deputyship applications

- Deprivation of liberty

Caroline Barrett is an Associate Solicitor and heads up Irwin Mitchell’s Public Law & Human Rights team in Cambridge. She acts in a wide range of cases against statutory bodies, including judicial review applications, welfare disputes within the Court of Protection, and special educational needs. She specialises in cases concerning disabled children and adults.

Rosie Campbell is a solicitor in the Public Law & Human Rights team in London. She acts for vulnerable adults and their families in disputes in the Court of Protection concerning their health and welfare. She also acts for adults and children in relation to their access to health and social care, advising on the lawfulness of decisions taken by statutory bodies.

Family Matters offers 1:1 support for parents and carers of children with extra needs. We can work with you to focus on areas of family life that are causing concern and identify steps to address them. We can provide information, support and advocacy services. If we can’t find an answer, we will find someone who can.

Family Matters run workshops and drop-in sessions at the Disability Action & Advice Centre, 4 Waldegrave Road Teddington TW11 8HT. RUILS staff, including Surabhi Dhondiyal and Linda Campbell-Arthur from Family Matters, are on hand to answer your questions.

How to get there: Our office is well connected by public transport with Bus 281 stopping at the top of the road and Bus 33 opposite the office. Parking is very limited at the DAAC, but the Teddington Swimming Pool on Vicarage Rd, Teddington TW11 8EZ, has paid parking. There is also some paid parking on Teddington High Street and some free parking on nearby roads.
