Description

CoCoast Plastic Awareness June - Thursday 15th

This month's Wine and Science at the MBA is all about ocean plastics with a special lecture from Prof. Richard Thompson, from the University of Plymouth.

What?

All the plastics ever created are still on our planet today, and lots of it ends up in our oceans. Current estimates indicate that at least 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, and stays there.

This month we aim to give you a broader knowledge of ocean plastics, the effects plastics are having on our marine environment, and highlight modern day use of "single use plastics".

Event plan:

Please feel free to attend both or either of the events. The main event will be the Wine and Science from 18:00.

14:15 - 16:30 Beach clean at Jennycliff Beach

We will be joined by the Marine Conservation Society to conduct a beach clean on Jennycliff Beach. Come and do your bit to clean the beach and see the types of litter that are washing up on shores worlwide. Meet at the Jennycliff carpark at 14:15. We will be getting the Mountbatten Ferry to Mountbatten and walking to Jennycliff.

17:00 - 18:00 Free soup and roll for those who attended the beach clean at the MBA. For those of you who attended the beach clean at Jennycliff, we will keep you going before the Wine and Science with a free bowl of soup and a roll back at the Marine Biological Association. Please feel free to bring your own "packed dinner" to eat if you would like. A glass of wine/drink of choice will be available for CoCoast volunteers and beach clean attendees, but the usual CoCoast evening wine and nibbles will be much more limited than usual.

18:00 - 21:00 Wine and Science evening event

At 18:30, we have the delight of hosting Prof. Richard Thompson from Plymouth University to talk about his research on marine plastics. His cutting edge research on plastic debris in the marine environment has spanned over 20 years and has been presented at international governmental conferences.

After the talk, there will be adverts and information from local groups who are dedicated to conserving the marine environment, and promoting limiting single-plastic use. Come and learn more about their work and how you can make a difference. Videos about plastics in our oceans will be also be shown during the evening. The Marine Conservation Society will be at the event promoting their June no single use plastic challenge and their nationwide beach clean in September.

All food and drink at this event will be bought as free of plastic as possible, therefore not contibuting plastic waste to the environment.

Parking at the MBA is free for the evening (but please note you will need to register your car on arrival).
