Event description
This webinar explores how we can tackle the climate emergency and extreme poverty simultaenously, by making carbon charges international.

About this event

This webinar is aimed at activists, academics, policy-makers and all who have an interest in global justice and sustainability.

We will discuss an alternative to national carbon taxes - International Carbon Charge and Dividend. This proposal aims to directly address the climate emergency in a way that is consistent with climate justice. As well as driving a massive shift away from fossil fuel use, carbon dividends have significant potential to tackle extreme poverty and chip away at inequality between the Global North and South.

This proposal therefore provides an opportunity to tackle the world's greatest emergencies - extreme poverty and climate change - through a single, practical scheme. Join us to hear how it would work, and how you can help shift climate debates to incorporate global justice.

Two speakers will present, followed by time for questions and discussion:

- Rahul Basu, Goa Foundation, India. Rahul will explain their approach to natural resources including minerals as a shared inheritance, how it results in dividends for present and future generations, and explore the relevance of these models for future Deep Sea Mining and other global commons.

- Laura Bannister, World Basic Income, UK. Laura will present the International Carbon Charge and Dividend proposal and explain its potential to tackle both climate change and extreme poverty.

Places are limited to 100 and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis on the day, so please arrive on time to ensure you can join us. You will be emailed the link to join the webinar in advance of the session.
