Information

Carbon Literacy training courses are available for anyone across the West Midlands to take part in, to empower you on knowing what you can do differently to create a positive impact on climate change and help you to influence others to drive action.

The training is funded by The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Module 4 is the final module of the training course, where we shall talk through with you on how to complete your action plan, which we shall send off to the Carbon Literacy Project to assess. If your application passes, you shall be accredited as Carbon Literate and sent your certificate.

You must have completed modules 1 – 3 online before signing up to complete module 4. You can find the training links, freely accessible on the West Midlands Combined Authority website by searching for Carbon Literacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carbon Literacy?

The Carbon Literacy Project define Carbon Literacy as;

“An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis”

What is this free Carbon Literacy training?

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) have an exciting opportunity for Games volunteers and citizens of the West Midlands to access Carbon Literacy training at no personal cost!

In alignment with The Carbon Literacy Project we have created this free training course for both volunteers and West Midlands citizens which helps demystify many of the elements about carbon impact and climate change. The aim is to empower individuals to know what they can do differently in a world where climate change is one of the defining challenges of our generation.

What does the course involve?

There are four modules; the first three are self-led, e-learning modules which can be completed online at your own pace. The fourth and final session will be an online facilitated workshop.

The course covers the following key topics:

  • The basic science behind climate change, how it will affect us globally and locally.
  • How climate change will affect the region and also sport, across the world.
  • Your personal carbon footprint, why its relevant to you and how you can reduce it, what action you could also take in a group such as your friends and family, community, at work etc.
  • Exploring strategies for influencing others to take action on climate change

There is no requirement to do all modules but if you complete the course successfully, you will gain a certificate and become formally accredited as carbon literate.

This course is being delivered via ZOOM. Please register here on Eventbrite for your preferred date and you will receive the Zoom joining instructions prior to the course.
