Who is this training for?

This training will help people to learn how the Climate Emergency relates to Scotland’s communities and how to respond effectively. The training will empower you to take effective action on climate change at a community, organisation and individual level.

The training is relevant for staff and volunteers at community-led organisations, networks and projects, as well as people involved with supporting communities, or interested in community-led action on climate change.

What certification will I get?

The training is fully accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project and gives you the opportunity to be certified as Carbon Literate.

Being Carbon Literate means gaining knowledge of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and identifying positive actions to tackle them.

How long will the training take?

This Carbon Literacy Training is eight hours of learning in total, which includes:

  • Two 2.5 hour live sessions via Zoom.
  • Self-study exercises via our online Moodle eLearning platform
  • A Carbon Literacy Assessment, which takes place as an online self-study activity, and should be completed within one week of the second live session

To apply to be certified as Carbon Literate you must participate in the online sessions, and complete the self-study exercises, including the Carbon Literacy Assessment.

What are the learning outcomes of the training?

This training will help upskill people involved with communities, so they have the knowledge required to successfully respond to the Climate Emergency and help move towards net zero.

We include community-specific content to help you:

  • Understand how Scotland's communities will be impacted by climate change.
  • Understand greenhouse gas emission sources in communities and your own organisation.
  • Learn how tackling emissions within the sector and your community/organisation can lead to more efficient and resilient communities.
  • Find out co-benefits of tackling emissions, such as improving local areas and developing skills.
  • Understand the science of climate change and the meaning of terms like 'Climate Emergency', ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’, ‘net zero’ and ‘carbon footprint’.

How and when will the training take place?

The live sessions of the training will take place online via Zoom on Friday 14 November and Friday 21 November 2025.

Both sessions will take place at 10:00 – 12:30.

You must register via Eventbrite to attend the training. Please contact climate@keepscotlandbeautiful.org if you require assistance with registration.
