On this two-part course, we will explore what a positive future might look like and consider the changes that are underway in our society to address climate change. We will also look at the specific reasons why and ways in which all charities – including yours – can act on climate, and how barriers might be overcome.

Then following on from the training we are hosting an online session on Tuesday 4 February 2025 to bring course participants together to:

- Share the work you're doing, the challenges you're facing and success you've had

- get ideas and support from other small charities

- let us at the Foundation know how we can build our support for you in this area.

Why is the Foundation offering this training?

A recent report shows that 80% of charities are concerned about the climate crisis, but unclear about action they need to take to become more sustainable. Challenges in taking action are linked to a lack of knowledge as well as the costs associated with taking action.

We know that climate change will disproportionately impact marginalised and lower income communities – including here in the UK. This demonstrates how taking climate action is key to the purpose of charities seeking to address complex social issues.

With increasing funding becoming available for charities to take climate action, we hope this offer will enable your organisation to consider how you can make use of opportunities and access resources to become more sustainable.

Who is this for?

The course is suitable for people who are new to this topic, or who have some basic understanding but want to develop more confidence in this area. Participants who successfully complete the course can achieve a Carbon Literacy certificate.

We ask that a maximum of two people per charity register for the course. Do get in touch if you're keen for more colleagues to take part.

About the course

The course consists of two half-day interactive sessions, together with around an hour of learning material at a time that suits you between the two sessions, and completion of an evidence form at the end of the course.

During the sessions, you’ll cover:

1. What Greenhouse Gases are, where they come from, and their relationship to climate and weather

2. How changes in the climate are increasingly affecting us locally, regionally, in our country, and in other parts of the world;

3. What the main changes are that we can make as a society to cut greenhouse gas emissions

4. What action we can take within our charities, for our mission and beneficiaries

5. How we can motivate others to take action, including gaining the confidence to express our Carbon Literacy to others.

The course will be delivered by Nick Perks, a charity consultant specialising in climate change work and certified trainer for the Carbon Literacy Project.

Carbon literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

Carbon Literate citizens understand how climate change will affect them – both geographically and sectorally – and have acquired the knowledge and skills to lower their carbon footprint, with typical realised carbon savings of 5-15% per person.

Over 90,000 people have become Carbon Literate through this and similar courses accredited by the Carbon Literacy project.
