Description

Bedminster Energy Group are really happy to welcome Molly Byrne and Wendy Stephenson from Bristol-based charity The Converging World, to talk about the role of carbon offsetting and reforestation in Bristol's goal for carbon neutrality:

In 2015 Bristol City Council announced their goal to be carbon neutral by 2050, an ambitious yet necessary target centred around the increased energy efficiency and access to green power. However how can true neutrality be achieved when there will always be emissions that can’t be avoided?

On the 30th of November 2015 the UN leaders on Forests and Climate Change issued a statement saying that ‘Reducing emissions from and enhancing removals through forests can reduce billions of tons of emissions per year and are essential to prevent catastrophic climate change’. Since then we have continued to edge closer to our global climate threshold, with policy continuing to focus on reducing emissions rather than sequester them completely.

If we are to sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the most cost-effective way available to us, it is now critical that we openly debate the role of reforestation (at home and abroad) as a way to achieve carbon neutrality.

Molly Byrne is a Programme Manager at The Converging World, and one of her roles is managing the charity’s carbon credit accreditation UNFCCC and Gold Standard and sales ready for sale.

Wendy Stephenson has worked in environment and energy for more than 20 years both in the UK and overseas for the corporate, charitable and public sectors. In the past Wendy was the Chair of the Manufactures Climate Change Group and sat on a number regulatory committees in Westminster and Europe. Wendy was the lead author of the Exmoor Carbon Neutral Strategy and the West Somerset Climate Change Strategy which led to securing a £5m grant for the area to develop a low carbon economy. One of her primary roles now is the CEO of The Converging World, a Bristol based charity which invests in renewable energy in India and uses the surplus income to support reforestation and other environmental and social initiatives.
