Event description

Description

CBR FLyer 2017

Put your skills to the test in our engineering challenge:

Build a boat out of nothing but a few bits of cardboard and some sticky tape, then sail it around a course in Plymouth harbour!

The winner is the last one to sink!

Entry fee: £20 (paid on here) per team (max. 6 per team) + £20 REFUNDABLE deposit brought on the day for the tools provided.

This year we are expanding the event to include a 'pre-build' category. This means you have two options to choose from when registering:

  1. Build on the day - Feel like you can build your vessel in 3 hours? This is the one for you!

  2. Pre-Build - If you feel you need more than 3 hours to perfect your design, register for pre-build and lift the pressure off your build. Just turn up on the day with your vessel and your sea legs ready to race! We will provide free workshops if you feel you need a bit of a steer.

See below for more details on each.

Build on the day

We will supply you with all of the equipment, materials, and engineering expertise you need to construct a boat and paddle it safely accross the harbour.

You will have 3 hours to design and build your boat before the race begins. Engineers will be on hand to help you.

Choose from 3 start times: 10am, 11am, and 12pm.

Pre-Build

If you don't feel like 3 hours is enough time for you to design and build the luxury yacht of your dreams, this is your chance to build your vessel in your own time.

Turn up on the day with your boat at 12pm to sign in. Racing will start at 12.15pm.

Optional pre-build workshops will be provided to all entrants who feel they need an extra bit of engineering expertise to complete your boat. All materials will be provided to those who attend. These workshops will be held at Plymouth City College on Saturday 12th August at 9.30am-12.30pm and 1pm-4pm. Tickets for the Workshop will be £5 per team to cover the materials. This does not cover the cost of race day entry. A separate ticket will need to be purchased for this. We suggest a donation on the day to cover the cost of the venue and refreshments. Just remember to take the boat home with you afterwards!

If you feel you can complete your boat by yourself, show us what you can do. Just remember that you can only use permitted materials.

Please read the rules & regulations provided later in the registration.

Buoyancy aids and safety boat support will be provided by qualified instructors from the Plymouth and Devon Schools Sailing Association (PDSSA).

Food will be available for purchase from The Boathouse Cafe.

Please read the full competition rules and restrictions before entering a team. Answers to frequently asked questions can be found below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age restriction?

Yes. Unfortunately, children under 6 years old cannot take part for safety and insurance reasons. Each team must have at least one adult (18+) member, who shall be responsible for the child (<18) members of the team.

Do I need to be able to swim?

YES! You must be able to 'tread water' unaided for at least 2 minutes. Buoyancy aids will be provided and MUST be worn at all times whilst in the water. A safety boat will escort you throughout your voyage!

Where can I park?

The closest car park is Elphinstone Car Park, which adjoins Commercial Wharf. On street parking is also available along Madeira Road, leading to the Hoe.

What should I bring?

  • A towel! You WILL get wet!
  • Warm, dry clothes for afterwards
  • Suncream and drinking water
  • A raincoat (this is the English 'summer' we are talking about)
  • £20 in cash as a (refundable) deposit for the tools and equipment that we will lend you
  • Enthusiasm, imagination, and a good sense of humour!

Is there anywhere to leave my valuables?

No. Unfortunately not.

What if the weather is bad?

Unfortunately, this event is rather dependent on the weather. We will make a decision about the weather on the morning of the event. If it looks bad, we will contact you by telephone. If we have to cancel the event for this, or any other reason you will receive a full refund in due course.

Can I change the members of my team?

Yes, but you MUST update your registration details reflect those of the people who will be taking part.

How do I update my registration details?

From the menu at the top of the page (next to your profile picture), select: Tickets > Manage > Edit

How can I contact the organisers?

Please email devcornchair@imechenearyou.org or michael.elliott@sdsolution.co.uk
