Event description

Description

June 2017 marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first book in the series that was to change the landscape of children’s literature publishing worldwide.

To celebrate this anniversary, BookTalk is inviting three literature scholars to explore the phenomenal growth and global impact of the series in the years since the release of The Philosopher’s Stone.

  • Dr Siwan Rosser (Lecturer in Welsh, Cardiff University) will focus on the Welsh translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd, transl. Emily Huws (2003) – examining the various, and sometimes conflicting, translation methodologies used to create the Welsh text.
  • Dr Ann Alston (Senior Lecturer in English Literature, University of the West of England) will explore ideas of narrative and storytelling throughout the Harry Potter series and will consider the ways in which the series interrogates narrative conventions and adult authority.
  • Dr Lucy Andrew (Lecturer in English Literature, University Centre Shrewsbury) will discuss the extratextual afterlives of the Harry Potter series, both in official capacities such as the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, the Pottermore website and the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (2016), and in the form of fan cultures and fan-created content.

The speakers will present short talks and there will be plenty of opportunity for audience questions and discussion. To make the most of the session, you may like to read or re-read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, although the talks will move beyond this to look at the series as a whole.

As usual, the main event will be preceded by a reception with tea, coffee and biscuits at 6.30pm in Cardiff University’s School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Maindy Road, Cardiff CF24 4HQ.

All welcome! Book your free tickets via Eventbrite by registering using the link above.
