Event description
Explore Cardiff Energy Recover Facility to see how your non-recyclable waste is turned into energy to power approximately 50 000 homes.

About this Event

Ever wondered what happens to your non-recyclable waste once it’s left your house? Did you know that your waste is not rubbish after all but can be transformed into renewable energy to power thousands of homes in Cardiff every year? Well, this is the kind of magic that is happening everyday behind the scenes at the Trident Park Energy Recovery Facility.

Cardiff Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is the largest ERF in Wales treating waste from the local authority and local business contracts. The facility handles 350,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste, per year. It diverts at least 95% of South Wales’ residual waste away from landfill and generates 250GWh of electricity for the National Grid. That is enough to power approximately 50,000 households.

The facility also boasts a world class environmental education centre where young and old are invited to learn about energy recovery technology, and all the different ways that they can reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

On 14th and 15th September, Project Green and Viridor are opening the doors to this incredible facility and giving the Cardiff community a sneak peek, as part of the Open Doors celebrations taking place across Wales.
