Event description
Explore and celebrate healthy and self-questioning civil society through poetry, music and fine art.

About this Event

For the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka (1907-1977), the arts and culture lay at the heart of a healthy and self-questioning civil society. This exciting live event will explore and celebrate these ideas through poetry, music and fine art. Thanks to his contributions to phenomenology and the philosophy of history he is regarded as one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century.

A distinguished panel of English-speaking experts will include Ivan Chvatik (director of the Patočka Archive), Vladimir Urbánek (from the Comenius Institute), and Michaela Belejkaničová, whose research is into Patočka and his ideas.

The event will also feature a live performance of Beethoven’s Quartet No 15 in A Minor, Op 132 (one of Patočka’s favourite pieces of music), and readings of poetry in English translation written by the acclaimed Czech poets Vladimir Holan and Karel Hynek Mácha. The event will also feature images by the Czech artist Mikuláš Medek and collages by Jiří Kolář, a friend of Patočka.

Discover fascinating new cultural experiences and an inspiring new approach to the role of the arts and culture in the 21st Century!
