Event description
Experiences of Care Leavers in Higher Education

About this Event

The conference has been organised by three students in the Division of Social Work and Social Care who are all Care Leavers. This conference will launch a Peer Mentoring Service for Care Leavers in the Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences. We aim to raise awareness of the struggles Care Leavers can face at university and how this can affect their emotional wellbeing, which can then impact their overall performance at university. We will also discuss the support needs of Care Leavers in Higher Education and what support we believe as Care Leavers, universities, social workers, and related professionals should be offering. We will celebrate stories of Care Leavers who have managed to achieve their goals, whilst acknowledging the barriers and struggles that we have been presented with and exploring how much easier this journey can be if we are given the right support. We need to recognise the resilience of Looked After Children and Care Leavers and help them to recognise their immense potential.Speakers include Lachaun Minter and Jackie Harrison (MA Social Work students and conference organisers), Dr. Jim Goddard (Head of Division Sociology and Criminology and researcher and writer on Care Leavers’ experiences), Phil Slack (Community Resource Worker), Leanne Hunt (Peer Support Coordinator, University of Bradford) and Beth Crossfield (Recruitment Officer, University of Bradford).

Conference organisers:Lachaun Minter (MA Social Work year 2),

Jackie Harrison (MA Social Work year 1) and

Courtney Heyworth (BA Working with Children, Young People and Families year 1).
