Description

This is a comprehensive session to help you with all aspects of caring for photographic collections in museums, archives and other heritage organisations. The day will be a mix of talks, demonstrations and practical activities, and handouts will be provided for each delegate. It will cover the following:

- What are photographs?

- Factors that affect photographs and how to manage them

- How to identify different photographic processes and their respective conservation needs

- Methods and materials for storing different types of photographs

- An overview of how conservation can compliment cataloguing and digitisation projects


What will you learn?

You will learn about the main groups of photographic materials and how to identify them. You will learn about the different conservation needs each group has and what storage methods and materials are most suitable. Overall you will learn how to make the most of your photographs and how caring for them can increase accessibility to your collections.You are welcome to bring problem items (or photos of them) for discussion.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for delegates from museums with photographs in their collections. No prior knowledge is needed.

Session Leader

Sarah Allen, is a freelance photographic materials conservator based in Somerset. Sarah has over 10 years experience and, together with SW CDO Helena Jaeschke, won the ICON Care of Collections award for the PRIMROSE project developing photographic collections across the South West.

Teas and coffees will be provided throughout the day, but we ask delegates to make their own lunch arrangements. Please note spaces will be prioritised for delegates attending from accredited museums or those working towards accreditation.
