Can you give me some Career Advice? – How might CIPD members respond?
The term ‘careers advice’ is used in many ways. Some people simply want to know whether to apply for a specific job, while others want suggestions as to what to do next in their chosen profession. Some might even be seeking advice on what kind of job or career they should follow.
Throughout their working lives, most people are going through one or more stages in a cycle of activities. The phases are taking stock of what is available in the world of work, themselves and their circumstances and/or
deciding what to do next and/or learning from their continued experience of work and/or reflecting on their current work and way of life and whether to try and move on.
So one thing that CIPD members can do is to clarify where people are in this cycle of activities and the kind of help that is being sought. But what more can they do? If asked, can they at least contribute to the really big decision of considering a new career?
John Toplis was first introduced to the principles of Careers Guidance when working at the National Institute of Industrial Psychology and studying at Birkbeck College. He has carried out several research studies and has been involved in the training of careers officers.
This is an opportunity to take stock of your own skills for both giving and taking advice and you will be encouraged to share your thinking; bring a colleague or friend if you wish. This could be the first step in changing your job (or even your Career) in 2016.
Those attending are reminded that the Branch is currently making an association with Saville Consulting. The international psychometric assessment business is currently developing their offering of career guidance tools and are willing to provide volunteers with free access to three online assessments in exchange for free personalised feedback on their own career preferences.
Participants will not be obliged to share their results with anybody and the report which will be sent to each person who completes the assessments is designed to be used by untrained users.
If you would like to take part (or wish to nominate an individual or group of people) then please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and CIPD membership number and you will be sent full details of what is involved.
From 8.15 – 9.00 Festive Networking
Mince pies and wine will be available. Some may wish to exchange business cards and even cv’s, or seek or offer mentoring in the New Year.
