A free workshop for Foundation Doctors across the West Midlands.

Please note: This is a rescheduled workshop date following the earlier cancellation due to COVID-19 restrictions. Depending on how restrictions develop in the run-up to the workshop we may need to change the date. We will keep everyone informed

What can you expect on the day?

Time to consider issues such as choosing a specialty and managing your career; reflecting on what is important to you in work and life; understanding your skills and strengths, and identifying evidence and examples; understand the application process for specialty training, competition levels, recruitment trends and alternatives to going straight into training; building your CV and application portfolio and planning for the future...

Look forward to an interactive, fun and thought-provoking day with lots of opportunities for practical activities, discussion and learning from each other.

FAQs

How do I get time off to attend? The foundation school have confirmed that as a Foundation Year 1 Doctor, you can use an allocated day from your F2 Study Leave entitlement to attend this workshop.  Please confirm the process with your  Educational Supervisor and Postgraduate Centre colleagues.

I can't make this date at my Education Centre, will there be other dates? We would prefer you to attend at your own Trust, but if this is not possible, and if your Trust is happy for you to travel to other sites, then you can book at another venue. What if I need to cancel or re-arrange my booked date? Simply cancel your booked date using ‘Cancel Order’ in Eventbrite or by e-mailing us at workshops@career-skills.co.uk. To book onto another date check the list above for all dates and venues and book on to the workshop required. Please do so in a timely manner so that the place can be offered to another trainee.

Will I receive a certificate of attendance? Yes, everyone attending will receive a PDF certificate of attendance.

Is there a programme?

9.30-12.30 Delivery of participative online careers workshop

12.30-1.30 Lunch

1.30-4.30 Self-directed career learning. Suggested activities include the following (see material provided in the workshop activities Word document and workbook PDF document):

- complete the Career Skills Health Check

- complete the Values worksheet and write/reflect on examples that may be useful for applications/interviews/portfolio

- complete the skills analysis and consider your examples/evidence

- download specialty or F3 person specifications and start to identify your examples/evidence for their requirements

- start/update your CV

- start to identify evidence and documentation for portfolio. Read specialty-specific portfolio guidance to identify required content/evidence

- start/complete any other tasks/activities identified in the morning workshop content or relevant to your own career plans/development (e.g. research F3 posts, research taster days, check specialty training, oriel and other related recruitment websites, etc.).
