Has Football Really Moved On From Racism?

Date: Thursday 17 March 2016

A wealth of pseudo and fantasy science has developed over the last 100 years to try and ‘prove’ that black people are naturally more athletic than white people. At the same time, this science has also tried to ‘prove’ that white athletes are naturally endowed with greater mental strength and intelligence. This lecture will examine how these theories have influenced professional football in Britain and have combined to exclude black people from positions of authority within the game.
Emy Onuora, Author of Pitch Black: The Story of Black British Footballers
A conversation with a friend about the dearth of books on black British football led Emy Onuora to write Pitch Black: The Story of Black British Footballers. Emy grew up in a football and sporting mad Liverpudlian-Nigerian family. He was coeditor of Merseyside-based football fanzine What’s the Score and he has lectured on race, ethnicity and sport. Combining his interests in football and anti-racism, he interviewed more than 20 black footballers for his book, getting to talk football with many of his sporting heroes.
